My idle is too high. This could be due to a throttle cable that is too tight or misrouted. It could also mean you need to turn the idle screw on the carb counterclockwise ~1/4 turn. A high idle may be due to a vacuum leak. The rubber manifold between the carb and the cylinder head can crack over time. Try starting the engine and squirting some water around the carb, manifold, and vacuum hoses. If the idle decreases, you have a vacuum leak somewhere.

Given that most scooters only take a quart of oil - what is the cost of a quart? Even the very best synthetic oil is only $5 a quart. If you have a 125/180/200cc Yamaha, you will also need a ~$6 oil filer. That's only $10! Is that cheap or what? As for oil, use a top quality oil made for smaller engines. I use a top quality synthetic oil (Castrol or Mobil One for instance). Remember that changing your oil is WAY cheaper than replacing your engine.

Starting fluid. Assuming sufficient compression, Squirt in a bit of starting fluid and see if she'll fire. If so, great! That means that you have sufficient compression and the proper spark. You should get the scooter to run for a second or so on starting fluid. If so there's a good chance you can get it running. One caution here - don't run your engine for very long on starting fluid because it's hard on the engine.

Fuel/air mixture. The last thing is the fuel/air mixture. You could be getting too much or too little of either. If the scooter has been sitting for a while, it's likely the gas has evaporated and left a bunch of sludgy deposits. Ask the seller when it last ran. If it's been more than ~3 months, you should clean out the fuel system and the carb. Disconnect the fuel line and drain the old gas. I've been able to burn old gas with no problem by using it in my truck. Add fresh fuel and make sure it flows smoothly through the petcock (on the bottom of the fuel tank). If the petcock is controlled by vacuum, you'll have to draw a vacuum on the vacuum line in order for fuel to flow. The vacuum line will be the smaller line on the petcock. Do you get a good, steady flow of gas? If so, good. If not you will have to remove the petcock and clean it. The gas flow should stop when you release the vacuum.

The spark must occur at the right time. Just about all scooters made since around 1980 have an electronic ignition. These systems can rarely be set. In general, the spark occurs just before the piston reaches the top of it's stroke. There is a slight delay between the spark plug fire and the fuel-air mixture ignition. That's why the spark occurs a little early. Most ignition systems have an advance unit build in. As the engine speeds up, the time of the spark retards a little bit. This helps the engine fire the mixture at the proper time.

Most scooters need a minimum of 100 psi in compression in order to run start and properly. Compression should be checked when the scooter engine is warm. However, that's hard to do if your scooter is not running. So, just hook up a compression gauge and open up the throttle all the way. Crank the scooter until the needle on the compression gauge stops moving. This should take no more than 5 seconds. Very roughly, 100-125 psi is good, 125-150 psi is very good, and 150+ psi is great. If you don't have this level of compression, then you have bad valves and/or bad piston rings. If you want, you can add a teaspoon or so of oil to the engine through the spark plug hole. Then try the compression test again. If compression is higher, then it's likely you have bad rings. The oil will seal the rings and give you better compression. If compression is the same, then you have bad/misadjusted valves.

Of these well know motor scooter manufacturers is Cobra, a company that produces and sells all varieties of motor scooters. The chances are high that you have seen a Cobra motor scooter at sometime while shopping around.

The Cobra company also manufacturers Vento motor scooters which are another popularly bought product for the average scooter driver. The Vento scooters from Cobra are mostly made for commuter usage around large cities. The designs typically feature a two passenger style, similar to what many people know as mopeds. At any motor scooter retailer there is likely to be a variety of colors on each model, though you may not find the color and model you want together, but buying online guarantees that you can get the color and design you prefer.

Cobra scooters also have several models under their name, such as the Cobra Gas Commuter, which is a fairly new released motor scooter. At most web sites this scooter sells for just under $600. Cobra also has several models of electric motor scooters, such as their Strike Pro Electric Scooter. The twist grip variable speed on this model allows you to go up to 17 mph. Although this Cobra electric scooter is a traditional standing scooter there is a special casing that holds and protects the battery and electric motor. The electric motor on the Cobra is more efficient that many other brands in that it runs for approximately 2000 cycles while others are generally at 800 cycles.

One of the newest Cobra motor scooters is their Extreme Cobra Off-road model. The two stroke engine on this model lets you speed off-road, but not without the help of the extra wide wheels. The wheels on the Extreme Cobra measure 38 in. by 15 in. whereas other street use motor scooters have about 12 in. wheels. The larger wheels provide a greater surface area where the scooter is making contact with the ground, and this is helpful when driving on uneven, rough terrain. The wheels on the Extreme allow for better balance, traction and steering capabilities.

How was the old gas? Did the gasoline smell old? If the scooter has been sitting over a year or so, the gasoline will turn into a varnish-like stuff. Then you'll have some serious cleaning to do. The gasoline will have evaporated for the most part, leaving a sludgy, molassas like substance in the gas tank, petcock, fuel lines, and the carb. All of these parts will have to be cleaned. This is especially a problem in the carburetor. Thoroughly flush out the gas tank and gas lines with new gas. I've had good luck using the old gas (in small quantities at a time) in my truck.

No one wants plain old electric scooters anymore, they don�t want just a gas powered scooter; the trend today is to get an X-Treme Scooter. An X-Treme Scooter is versatile, quick and can go the distance.

With growing popularity, X-Treme Scooters is filling that need.
1. X-Treme scooters are versatile: When you look for a scooter, whether it is a gas scooter or an electric scooter, you want to be able to fold it down fo easy storage. The foldable electric scooters are popular among college students, mariners, campers and most popular among those with an RV.
2. X-Treme Scooters are quick: All X-Treme Scooters are quick for their assigned task. It is important to note that the speed you get with your x-treme scooter is dependant on such variables as

a. Watts does not always equal power: When you see an electric scooter and it says 250,350,500 and some boast 750 up 1000 watt motors, how can you really be sure you�re getting what you paid for? Every electric scooter motor has a plate on it for identification. On the plate is the actual output rating for that motor. I have seen 500 watt scooters listed as 750 and 1000 watt. Be careful.
b. Voltage does not always equal power: If you have the wattage, you need the batteries to support the wattage. In the old days, everything was either an 8 volt or a single 12 volt system. Over the years, x-treme scooters have evolved into 24, 36 and 48 volt systems. Traditional electric scooters these days will have either 12 or 24 volt systems. When you see a 36 volt system, that will give you a minute increase in power, but the real advantage is distance and torque. The more voltage, the longer your scooter will run and the more weight your scooter will be able to cary.
c. The Controller Is Key: What is the controller? The controller is the �Brain� of your scooter. Think of the processor n a computer; the controller is the processor in your scooter and without this, the scooter will not work. Though you have no choice in what controller you get, you need to make sure that the controller will work with the motor and the battery setup of your scooter. Without compatibility between these systems, your scooter can blow fuses, surge the batteries, surge the motor, or even catch fire.

Most electric scooters and gas scooters these days are made in China. There are very few companies in the United States that make their own scooters. Go-ped is the leader of this group. X-Treme Scooters are gaining popularity and are currently used in X-Treme Sports; such as the X-Games. All around the country, you can find go-ped groups springing up and races are common.

Place a suitable container under the fuel line and draw air on the vacuum line to the petcock (if so equipped) and see how well the gas flows. The flow has to be more than a trickle. How can I increase the top speed of my scooter? This is a common question with the 50cc scooters, but it comes up with bigger scooters also. The most important question is how much money do you want to spend. If you have a 50cc, and you want to increase the top speed from 25 mph -> 50 mph, you might be better off just buying a new scooter. As you increase the scooter's speed and acceleration, you will find the brakes, frame, and suspension are probably not up to the task. Replacing all of these parts is quite expensive. If you just want a bit of increase performance of your 50cc scooter, there are probably carb, exhaust pipe, and variator (gearing) changes you can make. You might be able to find a big bore kit, so that you can increase the engine displacement from 50cc up to around 70cc. In general, the easiest thing to do would be to add a performance clutch or performance variator. These should give you a little better acceleration and/or top speed.

If you have an electric choke, check it to make sure it works. Check the resistance between the wires - you should see around 10 ohms or less. Measure the length of the choke assembly. Remove the choke from the carb and plug the wires into a 12V source for 15 minutes. The choke body should be warm. Measure the length again - it should increase by around 1/8".

The most important thing to do is regular oil changes for four stroke engines. Two stroke engines consume their engine oil, so you don't have to worry about changing it. Our scooters only hold about a quart of engine oil. The bigger Yamaha scooters have oil filters, but the Hondas do not have filters (just a small screen). Given the small displacement (engine size) of most scooters, they tend to get run hard. The small amount of oil, lack of oil filter and high rpm usage leads to oil breakdown much quicker than your in automobile. I change my scooter oil every 1000 miles. This may sound extreme, but consider two points: How long does it take you to go 1000 miles? Unless you are riding a 250cc scoot on the highway, it will probably take you a few months. It's not like you need to change it every week. If you are putting on a lot of highway miles, the engine is probably not being stressed with a lot of stop-and-go riding. You also are less likely to run the engine through a lot of hot/cold cycles. In this case you may be able to extend the oil change time. But I wouldn't :>)

If the exhaust pipe is clogged, your scooter will run terribly or not at all. It can be difficult to tell if the exhaust pipe is clogged. The easiest way to tell is to remove it and try to start the scooter. It will be a bit loud - two strokes will sound like a chain saw. If it runs, you know were the problem lies.

My idle is too high. This could be due to a throttle cable that is too tight or misrouted. It could also mean you need to turn the idle screw on the carb counterclockwise ~1/4 turn. A high idle may be due to a vacuum leak. The rubber manifold between the carb and the cylinder head can crack over time. Try starting the engine and squirting some water around the carb, manifold, and vacuum hoses. If the idle decreases, you have a vacuum leak somewhere.

First remove all rubber and gaskets or they will be damaged. After a ~20 minute soaking I blow out the carb with compressed air. You have to get all the jets and the passageways clean. Be sure the jets are clear, especially the starter jet. Sometimes carb cleaner won't clear out these tiny jets. Use a guitar/piano wire, a strand of copper electircal wire, or a tiny drill bit pin vise. Be sure not to increase the size of the hole in the starter jet or you'll change the tuning. Carefully reassemble everything, checking for cracks in the rubber carb boots and the gaskets. Replace them if they are old and cracked. Be sure and remove all rubber and gasket material first or they could get ruined. Spray carb cleaner also works if you're dilligent.

One of the key issues when looking for a mobility scooter is the range or distance that you will be able to use scooter before the need to recharge. The range is generally given by the manufacture in miles e.g. up to 10 miles. If you are buying the mobility scooter to make a specific journey e.g. from your home to a local town, you must ensure that the scooter you purchase has an adequate range to complete the journey.

We often receive feedback on our blogs and forums from customers who have purchased scooters which were not suitable for there intended regular journey in terms of range and ride quality. This is generally the case when a decision has been made purely on price. For example if you intend to complete long journeys, a small 3 wheel portable scooter may simply not be up to the job in terms of providing a comfortable ride and sufficient range. In this case a larger (and more expensive) 4 wheel, 4mph rated machine may be a better prospect. Ride quality is especially important should you suffer from a medical condition such as back pain or arthritis.

When taking delivery of a new scooter it is essential to test the range of the scooter by building up steadily before submitting the scooter to its full range. Compression check. If you just acquired the scooter, you should first do a full inspection before you try to get it running. Please see this page on restoration. If this is the case, I'd do a compression check first because it's easy. First check the quantity and condition of the engine oil. Add oil as necessary. I wouldn't change it unless it's terribly dirty. The engine could be bad so you'd waste the oil change. Hook up or purchase a good battery. Leave out the spark plug and crank the scooter for ~5 seconds. This helps to circulate the oil. Let it set for ~15 seconds and do it again. It's not a good idea to continuously crank the starter because it can overheat and wear prematurely. Most scooters need a minimum of 100 psi in compression to run start and properly. Compression should be checked when the engine is warm, but that's kind of hard to do if the scooter is not running. So just hook up a compression gauge and open up the throttle all the way. Crank the scooter until the needle on the compression gague stops moving. This should take no more than 5 seconds. Very roughly, 100-125 psi is good, 125-150 psi is very good, and 150+ psi is great. If you don't have this level of compression then you have bad valves and/or bad piston rings. If you want, you can add a teaspoon or so of oil to the engine through the spark plug hole. Then try the compression test again. If compression is higher, then it's likely you have bad rings. The oil will seal the rings and give you better compression. If compression is the same, then you have bad/misadjusted valves.

The most important thing to do is regular oil changes for four stroke engines. Two stroke engines consume their engine oil, so you don't have to worry about changing it. Our scooters only hold about a quart of engine oil. The bigger Yamaha scooters have oil filters, but the Hondas do not have filters (just a small screen). Given the small displacement (engine size) of most scooters, they tend to get run hard. The small amount of oil, lack of oil filter and high rpm usage leads to oil breakdown much quicker than your in automobile. I change my scooter oil every 1000 miles. This may sound extreme, but consider two points: How long does it take you to go 1000 miles? Unless you are riding a 250cc scoot on the highway, it will probably take you a few months. It's not like you need to change it every week. If you are putting on a lot of highway miles, the engine is probably not being stressed with a lot of stop-and-go riding. You also are less likely to run the engine through a lot of hot/cold cycles. In this case you may be able to extend the oil change time. But I wouldn't :>)

Like most things, there is a technique to this. Even a small person can put a large motorcycle on the center stand with the proper technique. Here's what I do: Hold the scooter with your left hand on the left grip. Put your right (or left foot) on the center stand to hold it down. Put your right hand under the seat area, where there should be a railing or a grip. This is the place where you'll lift the scooter a bit. Now in one motion, push down with your foot while you tug back with your left hand and up lift up with your right hand. If you do all of these movements at the same time with the proper motion, you'll have zero problems.

First remove all rubber and gaskets or they will be damaged. After a ~20 minute soaking I blow out the carb with compressed air. You have to get all the jets and the passageways clean. Use a guitar/piano wire, a strand of copper electircal wire, or a tiny drill bit pin vise. Be sure not to increase the size of the hole in the starter jet or you'll change the tuning. Be sure and remove all rubber and gasket material first or they could get ruined. Spray carb cleaner also works if you're dilligent.

Next up the line, you should get a performance carb and/or a new exhaust pipe. You'll need to replace these two components (and probably the air box) at the same time to get the best performance increase. The engine is basically just an air pump. The more air you can move through the engine, the more power you get. Adding a bigger carb draws more air (and more fuel) into the engine. But you restrict the amount of added air if you don't change the air box. You also restrict the amount of air out of the engine if you don't replace the exhaust pipe with a bigger (or more free flowing) exhaust pipe. In addition, just changine the carb changes the fuel / air ratio inside the engine. Your engine may or may not like the change. For instance, the new carb could give you more top end power, but also lead to starting problems. Or it may run better at low RPM's and poor at high RPM's. Tuning for best performance can be a lot of work! Try to buy a kit (carb, air box, exhaust pipe) that is tuned for your scooter. It will make things much easier. Lastly, add the big bore kit. This will give you more torque (pulling power) and better acceleation, but it won't necessarily add top speed unless you make gearing changes. For larger scooters, there aren't too many performance parts available here in the U.S. (except for some of the newer scooters). The easiest thing is to do a web search for "scooter performance parts" and see what you find. Otherwise, you can try:

Double check all connections, then crank your scooter for 10-15 seconds. Did it start? Do you hear any popping? It should sound like the engine is trying to run. If the gas tank is not too rusted or dirty, you might be able to get away with just flushing it out. Pour in some fresh gas. But if you are uncertain how old the gas is (even if it smells ok), drain the gas tank, fuel lines, and carb float bowl and refill with fresh gas. I once worked on an Elite 80 with fresh-smelling gas. I could get it to run on starting fluid, but not on gas from the tank. I finally ended up draining all of the old gas and re-filling with fresh gas. The scooter started immediately and run great after that.

When you go to check out the brand selection at any mainstream motor scooter retailer you will find only the most well known names, which is, for most consumers, beneficial because then you know the scooter you are buying is from a reliable company that can back up their product. Of these well know motor scooter manufacturers is Cobra, a company that produces and sells all varieties of motor scooters. The chances are high that you have seen a Cobra motor scooter at sometime while shopping around.

The Cobra company also manufacturers Vento motor scooters which are another popularly bought product for the average scooter driver. The Vento scooters from Cobra are mostly made for commuter usage around large cities. The designs typically feature a two passenger style, similar to what many people know as mopeds. At any motor scooter retailer there is likely to be a variety of colors on each model, though you may not find the color and model you want together, but buying online guarantees that you can get the color and design you prefer.

Cobra scooters also have several models under their name, such as the Cobra Gas Commuter, which is a fairly new released motor scooter. At most web sites this scooter sells for just under $600. The Commuter model is intended for driving through downtown areas, inner city areas and short distances around neighborhoods. Because this scooter model was designed to be used as an alternate vehicle, Cobra included several features that improve the quality of the ride. Most of the features are the same, but the engine is slightly reduced and maximum speed decreases about 5 mph. Though it is a bit smaller version the weight capacity, set at 385 lbs, can still carry two people.

Cobra also has several models of electric motor scooters, such as their Strike Pro Electric Scooter. The twist grip variable speed on this model allows you to go up to 17 mph. Although this Cobra electric scooter is a traditional standing scooter there is a special casing that holds and protects the battery and electric motor. The electric motor on the Cobra is more efficient that many other brands in that it runs for approximately 2000 cycles while others are generally at 800 cycles.

One of the newest Cobra motor scooters is their Extreme Cobra Off-road model. The two stroke engine on this model lets you speed off-road, but not without the help of the extra wide wheels. The wheels on the Extreme Cobra measure 38 in. by 15 in. whereas other street use motor scooters have about 12 in. wheels. The larger wheels provide a greater surface area where the scooter is making contact with the ground, and this is helpful when driving on uneven, rough terrain. The wheels on the Extreme allow for better balance, traction and steering capabilities.

4 Wheel Scooters

First remove all rubber and gaskets or they will be damaged. After a ~20 minute soaking I blow out the carb with compressed air. You have to get all the jets and the passageways clean. Be sure the jets are clear, especially the starter jet. Sometimes carb cleaner won't clear out these tiny jets. Use a guitar/piano wire, a strand of copper electircal wire, or a tiny drill bit pin vise. Be sure not to increase the size of the hole in the starter jet or you'll change the tuning. Carefully reassemble everything, checking for cracks in the rubber carb boots and the gaskets. Replace them if they are old and cracked. Be sure and remove all rubber and gasket material first or they could get ruined. Spray carb cleaner also works if you're dilligent.

Try to buy a scooter performance kit (carb, air box, exhaust pipe) that is tuned for your scooter. It will make things much easier. Lastly, add the big bore kit. This will give you more torque (pulling power) and better acceleration. It won't necessarily add top speed unless you make gearing changes too. I have owned about 40 Honda, Suzuki and Yamaha scooters over the years. Given basic maintenance I've generally found them to be quite reliable. Next, you'll have to remove the carburetor and clean it. There are a low of tiny fuel and air passageways in the carb that must be clean it order for your scooter to run right. Carefully take the carb apart. This can be relative easy (on a 50cc scooter) or quite difficult (a Riva 180-200 has limited carb access and 8 separate hoses running to the carb). The carb has tiny passages that get gummed up. The scooter just will not run correctly if the carb is not completely clean, so take your time. I use a gallon container of carb dip (you can get a gallon at your local auto supply store for ~$10).

Fuel/air mixture. The last thing is the fuel/air mixture. You could be getting too much or too little of either. If the scooter has been sitting for a while, it's likely the gas has evaporated and left a bunch of sludgy deposits. Ask the seller when it last ran. If it's been more than ~3 months, you should clean out the fuel system and the carb. Disconnect the fuel line and drain the old gas. I've been able to burn old gas with no problem by using it in my truck. Add fresh fuel and make sure it flows smoothly through the petcock (on the bottom of the fuel tank). If the petcock is controlled by vacuum, you'll have to draw a vacuum on the vacuum line in order for fuel to flow. The vacuum line will be the smaller line on the petcock. Do you get a good, steady flow of gas? If so, good. If not you will have to remove the petcock and clean it. The gas flow should stop when you release the vacuum.

How to choose a scooter depends on its purpose. Do you plan on using it for daily transportation and ride frequently or just something that you may use on the weekend for a quick trip to the store. You also need one that has good brakes and lighting.

If you are skillful at doing your own repairs then going with an older scooter could benefit you if the repairs aren't to disastrous. But brand name scooters, like Honda, hold up well even when used. Other things to consider when purchasing a scooter is the size/power that you will need. If you need to drive it on the freeway you will definitely need to speak to your local motor vehicle department about certain laws for engine size allowed. Some scooters are able to go up to 80 mph which is really convenient for motorists who need to travel frequently. If you will be going up any hills or carrying passengers you will definitely want to go with more horsepower. Scooters with 300cc's or more are good for this purpose.

For purely recreational purposes, look at smaller motors. These are actually much cheaper anyway, you can grab a quality ride for under $300. These usually max out around 30 mph. Scooters with 50 to 80cc's are perfect for this purpose.

This is just a small portion of information to help you choose the right scooter for you. Make sure to always inspect the credibility of any person or company that you plan on buying from.

Run at least a pint of gas through to help flush the system. If you don't get a flow then it's likely your petcock is clogged. You have to remove it before you can disassemble and clean it. Carefully reinstall it on the gas tank or you could get a gas leak. Reassemble everything and try to start the scooter. It will take several seconds of cranking to get the gas to work its way from the gas tank to the carburetor.

I have trouble getting my scooter on its centerstand. Like a lot of other things, there is a technique to this. Even a small person can put a large motorcycle on the centerstand with the proper technique. Here's what I do: Hold the scooter with your left hand on the left grip. Put your right (or left foot) on the centerstand to hold it down. Put your right hand under the seat area, where there should be a railing or a grip. This is the place where you'll lift the scooter a bit. Now in one motion, push down with your foot while you tug back with your left hand and up lift up with your right hand. If you do all of these movements at the same time with the proper motion, you'll have zero problems.

What's With All The Voltage?

Every day, customers either come in the store or call and ask about this scooter and that scooter. I ask everyone the same thing. What are you planning on using your scooter for? Some as transportation to work or school and more than most, the scooter is for their kids. But what scooter should you buy and what�s the big deal about voltage?

Electric scooters over the years have evolved tremendously. One thing that voltage plays a major role in is output power. The more voltage, the more output power that is available; but that is not the sole factor that determines power and that is not the only role that voltage plays in your electric scooters.

Lets start with the traditional 12 volt system. Now-a-days, the small kids electric scooters are single twelve volt systems. As you increase in wattage, that is how many watts of power that is generated by your electric scooter engine, the more juice that is required to power that engine more efficiently.

With the interest in faster electric scooters, the 24 volt system was introduced. The 24 volt system is traditionally a trickle-charge system where two 12 volt batteries are simultaneously connected and then the whole system runs the engine, as well as any other add-ons that you have on your electric powered scooter. If your scooter has the traditional headlight, brake light, turn signals and the such, then your battery setup is more than likely a trickle-charge system and these extra add-ons along with the motor require more juice than a simple 12 volt system would be able to support.

The traditional electric powered scooter that has all the extras will be either a 24 volt system or for the heavy duty and longer lasting electric scooters, you will get a much better setup with a 36 volt system.

The higher voltage systems provide more power to carry more weight farther. With a 24 v0lt system, your average electric powered scooter can travel for about ten to fifteen miles; if you�re lucky. The 36 volt systems have reached a maximum of twenty-five to even thirty miles on a single charge. There are some 48 volt systems out there that can travel up to thirty-five miles on a single charge, by those are few.

Simple comparison: Take a 24 volt 500 watt electric powered scooter and put a two-hundred pound rider on it and it will go an average of 12-18 miles, depending on the scooter. Take a 36 volt 500 watt electric powered scooter and put the same two-hundred pound rider on it and it will go an average of 16-24 miles on a single charge.

As you can see, voltage does make a difference when you are talking about the actual distance and the distance that your electric scooter will take you before needing more juice.

Believe it or not, your Honda and Yamaha scoots do have a small transmission. It's hidden away in a small area near the rear wheel. Don't forget about the tranny oil! There is only about 200cc of oil here - a very small amount. Most scooters use standard high quality engine oil and some take gear oil. If your scooter takes engine oil, it should be changed fairly frequently. The gears put a lot of shear stress on the oil, reducing its effectiveness over time. It is definitely a pain to change this oil and add the new oil, but it must be done. If not, the oil will eventually turn to a thick dark, molasses like stuff. Your bearings and gears will be very unhappy, and they will eventually fail. I once bought a Elite 150 from a nice lady who didn't change the tranny oil. The tranny on this scooter sounded horrible when it was ridden. She was lucky it had not locked up the rear wheel when she was riding, which would have probably caused a big crash. I bought it for $20 because she didn't want to have the tranny fixed. When I took the transmission apart, it was really in bad shape. Several gears and a few of the bearings were destroyed. I got it going again, but the cost of labor and parts was over $200. All because $0.25 of oil had not been changed...

If speed is your concern, no worries. Today�s gas powered scooters average around 25-30 miles per hour, while there are some high-end models that can hit 40, 45, even 50 miles per hour. Truthfully, I would not want to go 50 Miles per hour, but it is there if you need it.

My idle is too high. This could be due to a throttle cable that is too tight or misrouted. It could also mean you need to turn the idle screw on the carb counterclockwise ~1/4 turn. A high idle may be due to a vacuum leak. The rubber manifold between the carb and the cylinder head can crack over time. Try starting the engine and squirting some water around the carb, manifold, and vacuum hoses. If the idle decreases, you have a vacuum leak somewhere.
